Everyday Life Is Our Laboratory

Innovation is commonly associated with research laboratories, technology companies and specialised design studios. Yet many of the technologies, services and social practices that shape everyday life are continuously adapted, negotiated and reinvented outside these settings. Homes, neighbourhoods and local communities are places where people repair, modify, share and reconfigure existing resources in response to changing circumstances.

In recent years, design research has increasingly turned its attention towards these everyday practices. Rather than treating innovation primarily as the development of new products or services, this perspective examines how innovation emerges through ongoing interactions between people, materials, technologies and environments. Everyday life becomes a site of inquiry rather than merely a context in which innovations are implemented.

This shift also challenges conventional understandings of design. Design is no longer viewed solely as the activity of professional designers who mediate between production and consumption. Instead, research has begun to explore design as a situated capability that develops through reflection, making and use. Designing becomes an ongoing process of negotiating material constraints, practical knowledge and social relationships.

Such an approach draws together perspectives from design research, design anthropology and science and technology studies. Across these fields, growing attention is being paid to the ways in which technologies are co-produced through everyday practices, and how practical knowledge develops through participation, experimentation and material engagement rather than through abstract planning alone.

Rural contexts provide particularly rich opportunities for studying these questions. They contain extensive practical knowledge, longstanding craft traditions and social infrastructures that have evolved over generations. Rather than representing static traditions, these practices continually adapt to new environmental, social and economic conditions. Understanding how such practices change offers valuable insights into questions of sustainability, resilience and community innovation.

Seen from this perspective, a prototype is not simply an object under development. A prototype can equally be a place, a service, a building process or a community initiative that enables new forms of collaboration and learning. The purpose of prototyping is therefore not only to test technical solutions but also to explore emerging relationships between people, materials and everyday practices.

This perspective forms part of a broader movement within contemporary design research that seeks to understand design as an activity embedded in everyday life. Rather than separating research from practice, or designers from users, it investigates how knowledge emerges through situated engagement with the material and social world.
